The Beach House

The house on the beach was designed and built to complement the client’s lifestyle and maximize its beautiful location. The client’s brief was to create a refined, clean lined, modern but informal home with a relaxed beach feel.

The design needed to take optimum advantage of the site’s potential for outstanding views and create indoor and outdoor living spaces catering for a range of occasions and weather conditions. A house that was warm and welcoming for family and friends was important.

To maximise the benefits of the waterfront location, the windows were positioned to allow light to pour into the home and maximise the view of the water from every room in the house. To achieve this was a challenge due to the narrow block.

This was resolved by staggering the building along the site. It also enabled the house to be zoned, allowing guests to live independently whilst creating spaces for them all to come together. Extensive decks provide outdoor living areas that take full advantage of the sea breeze or shelter from the roaring 40s.

Richmond House

Light, space and an easy outdoor/indoor living flow was the emphasis for this practical, comfortable home designed and built for a young family. The landscape was a key element of the design of this house, located among special rare eucalyptus risdonii trees. The bark of this tree is predominantly grey in colour.

On this north facing sloping block, the house is split level to allow sunlight to most habitable rooms.

The house is built with light grey concrete blocks and contrasting stackbond blue blockwork. This creates a minimalist look with rendered wall cladding to bay areas. The grey blockwork blends with the surrounding trees.

Energy Efficient Home

The house is designed into two wings set at an angle, one for living and one for bedrooms.

A north facing courtyard is protected from westerly winds by the living and bedroom zones. As well as insuring the residence is able to enjoy maximum views from every room in the house, cross flow ventilation can occur.

The objective was to maximise natural light and views while maximising energy efficiency.

This home won 2008 HIA Energy Efficient home of the year.

Compact Design

The units are sited on a north facing block with views to Mt Wellington and Sleeping Beauty with the Kingston valley below. Units were designed to maximize sun, views and privacy for the residents. High ceilings create a feeling of space, which is enhanced by the full height doors. Despite the smaller footprint of the house these units have a huge amount of built in storage which helps maximise the space.

Portsea House

As designers for this project we worked closely with our clients to design a home that met their every requirement.

This home is zoned into different functional areas whilst maintaining a relationship between these spaces. The zones are a parents retreat and gym, children’s area with games room and cinema room and a guest wing.

A relaxed feeling is created through connections between indoor and outdoor spaces and functional flow throughout.

Mayfair Court

Key issues in developing this display home were achieving ideal orientation to the sun, manipulating aspect to maximize view, using the slope of the site to advantage and creating a house with maximum “street appeal”.

Entering the front door, there is a sense of arrival, the view to Howrah Beach is framed and catches the eye of the visitor. The gallery extends up the elegant stairway to the open plan living area on the next level. The living areas flow from one space to the next with 1100mm wide corridors, high ceilings and dramatic windows bring the outside in.

The kitchen blends into the dining and entertainment areas which open to an elevated deck. Windows in the three bedrooms and study are strategically placed for views and privacy. The main bathroom is divided into separate areas for bath, shower and toilet, while the ensuite has twin vanity basins. A private rear terrace is accessed via a multi-purpose room.

Orford Holiday Home

This beach holiday home is successful, due to a rare combination of a great site, and an excellent working relationship between client and designer.

The structure and layout of the house is simple and has been built sympathetic to its environment. With simplicity and low maintenance in mind, an inexpensive raw look of natural grey common blocks, with corrugated iron and timber was chosen.

The interior design is also simple and uncluttered. Doors and windows are positioned to provide water views right through the house even from the main entrance door.

The dining/meals area has been designed with a bi-fold door opening to the deck, allowing for extra space to cope with the ebb and flow of family and friends.
